FICFF Hosts Children from LÖSEV – The Foundation for Children with Leukemia in Türkiye – for a Cultural Visit in Shanghai

A Day of Culture, Care, and Connection

On March 4, a meaningful cross-cultural
exchange took place in Jing’an District, Shanghai. Five children from LÖSEV –
The Foundation for Children with Leukemia in Türkiye – visited the city for a
special cultural experience, organized and facilitated by FICFF (Fashion in a
Conscious Future Foundation), in collaboration with Nanjing West Road – Suhe
Bay Central Activity Zone.

The program, themed “Across Mountains and Seas: Love Without Boundaries,” was jointly developed by Nanjing West Road – Suhe Bay Central Activity Zone, FICFF, and LÖSEV. It aimed to offer the children an inspiring cultural experience while fostering mutual understanding and friendship across borders. To ensure a safe and meaningful visit, the FICFF team carefully designed the full-day itinerary and worked closely with local partners in Jing’an District. From welcoming the delegation at the cruise terminal to accompanying them to the airport in the evening, every stage of the journey was thoughtfully coordinated and supported.

Early in the morning, the cruise ship arrived at Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Shanghai, where the group was warmly welcomed upon arrival. A total of 15 participants joined the visit, including five children from LÖSEV, one accompanying nurse serving as team leader, six members of the FICFF team, and three representatives from Jing’an District. To ensure comfort and safety throughout the day, a 32-seat coach bus was arranged to provide transportation for the entire program. After completing disembarkation procedures, the group departed for the city center, beginning their cultural exploration of Shanghai.

The morning continued with a City Walk along Suzhou Creek, where Shanghai’s historical character meets its modern urban landscape. The group visited several cultural and architectural landmarks, including Shenyu Li, Suhewan MixC World, Tianhou Temple, and the historic Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce Building. Walking through streets lined with traditional architecture alongside contemporary developments, the children experienced the dynamic contrast between heritage and innovation that defines the city. As they explored the area, they observed their surroundings with curiosity, taking photos and engaging with the environment in their own way.

At midday, the group enjoyed lunch at a restaurant in Suhewan MixC World, where they were introduced to a variety of Chinese dishes. The diversity of flavors and ingredients provided a new culinary experience. Although the cuisine differed from what they were accustomed to, the children approached the meal with openness and curiosity, embracing the opportunity to experience something new. The shared meal created a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, becoming a meaningful moment of cultural exchange.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Shanghai Natural History Museum, one of the city’s most renowned science museums. As large dinosaur skeletons appeared before them and immersive displays of ecosystems unfolded across expansive exhibition spaces, the children responded with visible excitement and curiosity. The interactive exhibits sparked interest in science, nature, and exploration, encouraging a sense of discovery throughout the visit.

Following the museum visit, the group explored a local street market near Jing’an Temple, where they encountered traditional Chinese crafts. One of the most memorable experiences was “sugar blowing,” a traditional folk art recognized as part of China’s intangible cultural heritage. A craftsman demonstrated how melted sugar could be shaped and expanded into delicate forms. One of the children then tried the technique under guidance, and after a few careful attempts, successfully created a small cat-shaped sugar figure. The moment was met with laughter and applause, leaving
a lasting impression and offering a meaningful introduction to traditional Chinese craftsmanship.

The visit then continued at Jing’an Temple, one of Shanghai’s most iconic cultural and spiritual landmarks. Standing peacefully amid the modern city, the temple’s golden roofs reflected the afternoon light. The children were introduced to the cultural and
historical significance of the site and took part in a traditional incense offering, quietly making wishes for themselves, their families, and the future. The atmosphere of reflection and calm created a meaningful cultural moment, and photographs taken in the temple courtyard preserved this experience.

In the evening, the group visited several
shopping centers in Jing’an District, experiencing a different dimension of Shanghai’s urban life. The lively commercial environment, with its variety of shops and dining spaces, provided insight into the everyday rhythm of the city. The children explored the space, took photos, and continued to engage with their surroundings. The day concluded with dinner at a restaurant in the shopping center, offering a relaxed and warm setting before departure.

Throughout the day, communication between participants took place across languages with the help of translation
applications. Conversations unfolded through phones, with messages typed in
different languages and instantly translated, allowing for smooth and meaningful interaction. Technology played an important role in bridging linguistic differences, making it possible for everyone to connect, share, and understand one another.

At the end of the visit, a young representative from LÖSEV shared a message expressing their gratitude:

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your warm hospitality and kind support throughout our time in China. Visiting the temple, exploring the historical sites, and going to the dinosaur park were truly enjoyable and unforgettable experiences for us. Every part of the program was thoughtfully arranged, and everything was simply perfect.

Although we initially found Chinese cuisine different from what we are used to, we genuinely enjoyed this cultural experience and appreciated the flavors very much. We are especially grateful for the opportunity to learn more about your culture and your city through your guidance.

Your efforts, generosity, and sincere care mean a great deal to us. Please know that it would be our great pleasure and honor to host you in Turkey when you visit. Once again, thank you very much, and please accept our warmest regards.”

In a separate message, the representative
also shared their personal story and the purpose of their work:

“Hello, I am the Chairman of the Youth
Branch Executive Board of LÖSEV. I received treatment at LÖSEV and recovered, and after completing my education I began serving as the Chairman of the Youth Branch Executive Board. Our project aims to support the social and cultural development of young people between the ages of 15 and 25. You welcomed us very warmly, and we sincerely thank you for your valuable support. We are truly grateful for your presence and support.”

As evening fell, the group departed for Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The illuminated skyline of the city accompanied them on their journey, marking the end of a day filled with exploration, connection, and shared experiences.

Although the visit lasted only one day, it created lasting memories for everyone involved. For FICFF, this initiative represents more than a cultural visit—it reflects the power of compassion, collaboration, and cultural exchange in bringing people together across borders.
